On June 1, 2018, Kentucky Court of Appeals Judge Denise Clayton was sworn in as the Chief Judge for the Kentucky Court of Appeals, becoming the first African American Judge to serve in that role. When Chief Judge Clayton was appointed to the Kentucky Court of Appeals in 2007, she was the first African American woman and the second African American  to serve on the Court of Appeals.

On November 6, 2018, voters of the 5th Kentucky Appellate District elected Judge Pamela R. Goodwine to the Kentucky Court of Appeals, making Judge Goodwine the second African American woman and third African American to sit on the Court.

Above, newly-elected Kentucky Court of Appeals Judge Pamela R. Goodwine is seen being sworn in by Chief Judge Denise G. Clayton.  A momentous occasion representing the first time that two African Americans (let alone two AA women) have served simultaneously on the Kentucky Court of Appeals.
