When I hear the term ‘The Party of Reagan’ I hear racism. My older brother Solomon has long said the only thing Reagan did was “make racism fashionable again.” Remember that Reagan launched his 1980 presidential campaign in Philadelphia, Mississippi where three civil rights workers were murdered in 1964. Black folks were not surprised.
Couple that with the recent release of tapes between then California Governor Reagan and President Nixon in which Regan refers to Africans as ‘monkeys’ and ‘not having grown accustomed to wearing shoes’ and any argument against the notion of Reagan as a racist, strains credulity. Black folks were not surprised.
When I hear the term ‘American Values’ I hear racism. Members of the KKK and White Nationalist groups invoke that term at every turn along with ‘God-Fearing Christians’, just as so-called right-wing Republican evangelicals do. Yet, the former’s actions of hate, and violence against ‘the others’ and the latter’s advocacy of legislation that harms ‘the others’ exposes those values and false worship as corrupt and self-serving. Black folks are not surprised.
What is surprising is that so many people feign ignorance and shock that White Domestic Terrorism (WDT) is seeing a so-called resurgence in America. Well, here’s another shocking fact for you, WDT never left. The reason mainstream America (white folks) don’t recognize WDT is because the attire changed. The perpetrators stopped wearing the obvious garb of sheets and hoods, overalls and flannel shirts and traded them in for Brooks Brothers suits and policemen uniforms.
Now WDT doesn’t show up as lynchings, it shows up as police and wannabe cop shootings. It shows up as choke hold killings over loose cigarettes. It shows up as mysterious hangings on trash cans in jail cells. It shows up as police killing a black man holding a BB-gun he was buying in a Walmart as opposed to police peacefully apprehending a white man who had just murdered 20 people with an assault rifle in a Walmart. But black folks are not surprised.
What black folk are surprised at (maybe) is Americans’ amnesia, be it selective or just a case of historical ignorance. Need a refresher course? Ask these people.
- The Native Indian
- The descendants of slaves
- The descendants of the victims of the New York Draft Riots (1863)
- The descendants of the victims of Rosewood, Fl.
- The descendants of the victims of the Tulsa Race Riot/Greenwood Massacre
- The family of Emmitt Till
- The families of the four little girls
- The descendants of Medgar Evers and Martin Luther King, Jr.
- The families of Willie Edwards, Jr. Michael Donald, James Byrd, Trayvon Martin, Jordan Davis, Michael Brown, Eric Gardner, Sandra Bland, and Laquan McDonald
This does not even come close to the hundreds of thousands of blacks murdered whose names we don’t know. And please stop appealing to the ‘better angels’ of people who turn a blind eye to this. Satan doesn’t have better angels. But again, black folks are not surprised.
